I'll be your coach, I won't be your friend. If you need one of those, take it up with Doc or Coach Patrick. - Herb Brooks
Herb Brooks was a coach who created a sensational turning point in the history of the United States. Herb Brooks was the manager of the United States Olympic hockey team that came home with gold medals in 1980. That Olympics was a miracle (that was on ice). Herb Brooks was born in St. Paul, Minnesota on August 5, 1937. He was a very famous hockey coach mainly because he was the coach of the 1980 United States hockey team that took home gold at the winter Olympics. Herb Brooks was also the last person to be cut from the United States hockey team that played in the Olympics in 1960, which fueled him to exceed in winning the Olympics. Herb Brooks is considered the best hockey coach of all time. He is also the first person to beat the Soviets in 12 years or three Olympics. Herb Brooks coached in the NHL with the New York Rangers, New Jersey Devils, Pittsburgh Penguins and the Minnesota North Stars. He also coached the United States again. This time he won silver at the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Herb Brooks' philosophy was what won the Olympics. Like what Mike Ramsey, a retired hockey player, said: "He got inside our heads." Coach Brooks' philosophy was to really convince his players that they could battle anything. For example, Brooks once told the United States 1980 hockey team that one of the Soviet Union's legends (who played in the 1980s) looked like an actor for a comedy show. This convinced the players that the legend wasn't so tough-looking anymore. Another time where the philosophy was on display, as stated on the Players link, Coach Brooks and Rob McClanahan, a hockey player, were in a big argument after McClanahan got a serious injury in the first game of the tournament. Brooks questioned McClanahan's manhood and called him a "cake-eater." McClanahan, who was injured, played as well as he would have if he wasn't injured.
