Proccess Paper
For this History Fair project, I really wanted to do something with sports. I play a lot of sports and I enjoy playing them. I was going to do the project on Hillsborough (in England when a stadium collapsed) but realized that it didn’t affect the United States, much. I also wanted to do the 1994 World Cup in the United States but it did not fit the date requirements. The topic I chose for my project was on Miracle on Ice which was a sports event with a historical significance that impacted the United States and occurred within the required time frame.
In our school we had a whole week to work on this project. But at the time I had still not selected my topic. After I tried the first two topics, I searched for more sports-related historical turning points. I kept looking but really couldn’t find anything I liked. Out of luck, one day, I watched a Miracle on Ice movie. I then realized that I wanted to do my project on that. I did much research on the historical 1980s Olympics ice-hockey game, later called Miracle on Ice, and most of the sources I found and used involved the Cold War or how the United States flourished after the miracle.
From the day I started this project, I knew I wanted to do a website. The reason being is that I spend a decent amount of my time on the computer. I can easily type and search for what I need. I also did not want to talk for ten minutes about Miracle on Ice. I also did not want to do a play about the topic. So I thought that the website would be the easiest, for me, but I was wrong, because it required more work than I had expected. In the end I was pleased with this format because I researched a topic that was interesting to me and I learnt how to create a website. I started off writing about the story of the topic and then went to how it affected the United States.
Miracle on Ice really relates to the theme for this project. The theme is a turning point for the United States. Miracle on Ice had two turning points: one, the impact on youth hockey players and two, the outcome of the Cold War. After Miracle on Ice, many more children started to play hockey. But the main thing that Miracle on Ice did was affect the Cold War. Miracle on Ice was an unexpected event that brought optimism to the United States and is a symbol of the start of the downfall of the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union then became Russia and lost many of their East Europe countries. After Miracle on Ice the United States would no longer have to worry about the Soviet Union.
